Drow
Dark elves of the Underdark, and a playable race chosen at character creation.
| Ability adjustments | +2 Dexterity, +2 Wisdom, +2 Charisma, -2 Constitution |
| Alignment | Any evil |
| Favored class | Sorcerer for male characters, Cleric for female |
| Extra levels | +1 |
| First class | Any |
| Cost | Free |
| Race group | Elf |
| Appearance | Black skin, white hair |
The drow belong to the Elf race group, alongside the Drider. Anything that names elves - a spell, a favoured enemy, an item property - applies to you. The group is not something you choose and it changes none of your numbers.
Black skin and white hair are what you start with. You can change your appearance afterwards in the in-game editor.
Racial abilities
| Ability | Effect |
|---|---|
| Darkvision | You see in the dark without a light source |

| Immunity to Sleep | Sleep spells and effects do not affect you |
| Hardiness vs. Enchantments | +2 on saving throws against mind-affecting spells |
| Weapon Proficiency (elf) | Longsword, rapier, longbow, shortbow |
| Cast Darkness | From level 1, 3 + (your level / 8) times a day |
| Spell resistance | 5 at creation, +1 per level from level 2, capped at 44 |
Light sensitivity
Light sensitivity applies only while all of these are true at once:
- you are above ground
- you are not indoors
- it is daytime
- the weather is clear
- you are not under a Darkness effect
While it applies:
- -2 to attack and -2 to all saving throws
- every two rounds, a Fortitude save against DC 20; on a failure you are blinded for one round
Your own Darkness suppresses it, as does rain, being indoors, and nightfall.
That difficulty is fixed at 20 and does not grow with you. At low level it is a reason to stay out of the daylight; from around level 20, with the saving throws and equipment of a character that far in, it is passed routinely.
Alignment
The alignment requirement is enforced in two separate places.
At first entry into the world. A drow who is not evil at that moment is deleted, with a message explaining why. Character creation itself does not prevent the wrong choice.
Afterwards. If your alignment stops being evil, your racial abilities stop working until it is restored. You are notified both when it happens and when it is restored.
Extra level
A drow counts as one level higher than they are for anything that measures character level, including the rate at which experience is earned.
Starting area
Drow begin in Underdark - Veldrin'Zha. The area is underground and permanently dark, so light sensitivity never touches you there.
A drow captain stands at the spawn point. His quest line leads to the training area, which is inside the same city - you do not leave Veldrin'Zha to reach it.
Travelling between the Underdark cities
Veldrin'Zha, Loknar and Chaulssin are each connected to the other two by portal.
The portal to Chaulssin does not work when you first arrive. Beginning the drow main quest Minotaur Violence: Part 1, given by the Nurvureem Servant in Veldrin'Zha from level 8, is where you learn the city was destroyed. The portal starts working again only once you complete Black Dragon Domination: Part 2, given by Nurvureem Black Mother from level 15.
Factions
There are four player factions. Drow belong to the Drow and Humanoids bloc, which is two internal faction tags that are permanently allied, share a home region and share the same quest givers.
| Surfacers | Drow and Humanoids | Duergar | Undead | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surfacers | - | hostile | neutral | hostile |
| Drow and Humanoids | hostile | - | hostile | hostile |
| Duergar | neutral | hostile | - | hostile |
| Undead | hostile | hostile | hostile | - |
Opposing players and opposing NPCs are hostile on sight. Surfacers and Duergar are the only pair that is neutral; the Drow and Humanoids bloc is hostile to every other faction.
Everyone, whatever their faction, is neutral towards city guards, merchants, animals and neutral settlements.
See Factions.
Favored class
Male drow favor Sorcerer, female drow favor Cleric. On this server the favored class affects experience as follows:
- Single-classed in your favored class: +5% experience. The bonus ends as soon as you take a level of any other class.
- Multiclass penalty: two ordinary classes more than one level apart, with neither of them your favored class, costs 20% experience. Two such pairs cost 40%.
- Prestige classes are excluded from that comparison.
See Races.
