Ride

Ride decides how fast your mount can go, how much armour class you keep while mounted, and how much of a spellcaster you still are on horseback. It does nothing at all when you are on foot.

Every class treats Ride as a class skill, so it is one point per rank for everybody.

Without the Mounted Combat feat you drop to 150% the moment you are in combat, whatever your Ride rank is. Out of combat the table above still applies.

The Mount Affinity feat counts your Ride as 43 no matter what you have actually bought, which puts you at the top of the table for both speed and armour class.

Armour class while mounted

Mounting removes the dodge bonus Tumble was giving you - that is your Tumble rank divided by 5.

With Mounted Combat you get a Ride bonus in its place: your Ride rank divided by 5, but never more than the Tumble bonus you just lost, and never less than your Ride rank divided by 10. It counts towards the +20 dodge cap like any other dodge bonus, and you also gain whatever armour class the mount itself carries.

Without Mounted Combat you get nothing back, take a further -2 armour class, and none of the mount's own bonuses apply.

Spellcasting while mounted

With Mounted Combat, the mount's own spell failure is reduced by 10% for every 5 ranks of Ride. Without it, spell failure while mounted is a flat 30% and Ride does not reduce it.

Skills you lose while mounted

Being on a mount is not free for anyone who relies on these:

The -50 is ten times the mount's own penalty rating; five is the value every mount uses unless it says otherwise, and it is also what you get when you have no Mounted Combat feat.
