The mailbox holds the messages the server sends you. Players do not write to each other through it: every message comes from the systems below.

The mailbox belongs to the account, so a message about a sale is there whichever character you log in with.
Reading it
The mailbox button is in the players list toolbar. While something is unread the player-versus- player panel button flashes - on login as well, so a message that arrived while you were away is not missed. Opening the mailbox stops the flash.
The window opens on unread messages, ten to a page. A message stays until you delete it.
