Creatures
The things that fight back. The live bestiary - every creature the server has recorded a kill on, with how often and by whom - is in the armory; this page is about how creatures work.
Unique creatures
A creature that spawns from an encounter can come up unique. It is uncommon - around one in fifty, and the staff can raise the odds during an event - and a unique is a considerably harder version of the same creature.
Two things are worth knowing about the boosts a unique carries:
- They are permanent and supernatural. They cannot be dispelled, they survive rest, and they survive the death of anyone controlling the creature.
- They scale with challenge rating. A higher-rated creature gets both bigger numbers and better odds of the rarer boosts, so a unique at the top of a dungeon is a different animal from a unique in the fields.
A creature that was unique when an instance reset comes back unique.
Bosses are their own thing
A boss is graded, and every grade counts as five more challenge rating on top of its own, with extra hit points besides. That is what separates a raid boss from the same creature standing in a low dungeon.
Where they come from
- Encounters placed in the world, which are what unique creatures spawn from.
- Wandering monsters, which turn up near characters of some standing - challenge rating 5 and up - no more often than every few hours, and are chosen within a band of the party's own rating.
- Boss mechanics, which summon their own - see Bosses.
In the open world, the creatures of an area are put away while nobody is there and brought back when somebody arrives, in the state they were left in. Bodies fade a few minutes after death.
Taking one with you
Some creatures can be tamed with Animal Empathy, which has its own restrictions - a plot creature, a quest giver, anything immune to mind spells and anything inside an instance are all refused.
