Biography

[This is long and uneccecary, mostly for my own sake!]

"I did not become immortal because I feared death. I became immortal because I could not accept that mortality was something I had never been given the choice to refuse."

Background:
The Life Before Death

She was not born with a fascination for death.

Once, she was simply a woman who refused to accept that everything worth loving was temporary.

In her youth, she studied the old stories of heroes, kings, and mages who had sought to escape the grave. Most were cautionary tales. Some ended in madness. A fortunate few were said to have succeeded. What fascinated her was not the promise of power, but the question behind it:

Why must life end at all?

Her search eventually led her to powers far beyond mortal scholarship. She entered into a pact with a being she barely understood, gaining abilities that no mortal should have possessed. At first, the pact was enough. The magic made her stronger, wiser, and harder to kill. It gave her glimpses of something beyond the boundaries of ordinary life.

But every boon came with a price.

And every answer revealed another question.

Years passed. Her fascination became obsession. She began studying not merely necromancy, but the nature of souls, memory, identity, and the strange persistence of consciousness after the body had failed. She learned that immortality was not a single thing. There were countless ways to cheat death, and most of them were little more than elaborate prisons.

She wanted something different.

She wanted to understand the thing that made her remain herself.

Eventually, she stopped asking her patron for answers.

She began finding them herself.

The transformation into a lich was therefore not the beginning of her quest, but its culmination. She had spent years mastering the unnatural life that her pact had first introduced her to, until eventually she no longer needed to borrow eternity from another being.

She had made eternity her own.

Her lichdom is not a reward for embracing death.

It is the reward for defeating the limitations of life.

And whatever strange boons now answer her call are proof that she has finally mastered the source of her own existence.

She is no longer waiting for death.

She has simply made death irrelevant.

-----------------------------------------------------
In life, Elena had been a short, almost deceptively delicate woman. There had always been something pleasant about her appearance?a softness to her features and a certain charm that made it easy to underestimate her.

Death did not take that entirely from her.

Her flesh is unnaturally pale and impossibly thin, stretched over the subtle contours of the bone beneath. It should have decayed long ago, yet some persistent magic preserves it in a state just beyond death. Up close, the illusion of life becomes unsettling; every feature is still recognizably Elena, but there is almost nothing between skin and bone.

Her eyes are entirely white.

Only the faintest, impossibly thin lines reveal where her irises would once have been, giving her an intense, unwavering gaze that seems to focus on things far beyond whatever she is actually looking at. She rarely blinks. She rarely needs to.

Her hair has survived in much the same way as the rest of her. It is pale white, thin and slightly frayed, with the fragile appearance of something that should have fallen apart centuries ago. She nevertheless keeps it long, clean, and carefully maintained.

It is perhaps the last truly unnecessary vanity she permits herself.

She still dresses in a manner reminiscent of the woman she once was, though the details have inevitably changed. She has deliberately preserved something of her former appearance?not to deceive others, but for herself.

She remembers being Elena.

She remembers being young.

She remembers being small, cute, and very much alive.

And while she has discarded nearly every limitation that came with that existence, she sees no reason to surrender everything that she once enjoyed.

After all, eternity is a very long time.

One might as well look good for it.
